By Kathleen M. Reilly, Supervisor Local History & Genealogy Department

Federal Census Records

If you have research needs involving the U.S. Census, your best bet for ‘one-stop-shopping’ is the National Archives. However, for evening and Saturday excursions into the Census there is much available at the Local History & Genealogy Department of the Berkshire Athenaeum, where the following U.S. Federal Census Records can be found:

For the years 1850, 1860 and 1870, the Athenaeum has microfilm of the original Berkshire County Census Books for most towns. These particular books include the Agricultural, Industrial and Mortality Schedules as they were originally recorded. Also available is the AISI Census Search. These micro-fiche indexes are divided into nine sets, each set called a “Search”. The nine Searches cover the time period from 1608-1906, however the bulk of the records covered date from 1790 to 1850. This source is particularly helpful in tracking those pesky ancestors who keep moving around without leaving a forwarding address!

And Coming Soon . . .

Early in 2001 the Athenaeum, having entered into an agreement with the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, will begin accepting orders for the loan of microfilm from their holdings of over 2 million reels. Through this program, which will operate in the same manner as the service currently provided through the Mormon Family History Centers, Census materials from all over the world, (as well as many other types of records) will become available right here in Pittsfield. More specific details of this new offering will be available at the Athenaeum by early February.
