State and Colonial Censuses Available at the
New England Historic Genealogical Society
By David
Allen Lambert, NEHGS
Federal
censuses provide a tremendous amount of information, but all genealogists
wish they could look in on individuals and families more frequently than
once every ten years. State censuses, often taken halfway between the
federal census years, might allow you to take stock of a family outside of
those ten year parameters. In addition, similar records - such as
military censuses and tax lists - might also provide the extra information
you are seeking.
Below you
will find a list of the state censuses, special censuses, and tax lists for
the six New England states and New York available at the New England
Historic Genealogical Society in Boston. The number in brackets is the
Library of Congress call number. If the notation “also Loan” is
included in the call number, members of NEHGS can borrow the item from the
NEHGS Circulating Library by mail.
For a more
detailed description and general inventory of state census records,
including non-New England and New York records, consult
State Census Records by Ann S.
Lainhart (Baltimore: Genealogical Publishing Co., 1992). This book is
available at the NEHGS Research Library in Boston, and, for NEHGS members,
through the NEHGS Circulating Library. The call number is
MT/HA/215/L25/1992.
